Autumn 2006 brought a great color show to the North Carolina mountains near Asheville... and an early taste of winter! The photos below were taken on October 23 & 24 north of Asheville on the Blue Ridge Parkway. The color was peak at about 3,000 feet elevation, but winter had already arrived above 5,000 feet at Craggy Gardens and atop Mount Mitchell.

"Car hiking" at its best: A very scenic, winding gravel road takes you from the Craggy Garden picnic area down the mountain into Dillingham and Barnardsville. From there you can drive over to US 19/23 and back south to Asheville (take a left from end of the winding road, and another left when you reach Barnardsville, to each 19/23).

Rime ice covers trees at Mount Mitchell. It was 15 degrees at 4 PM on October 24 with light snow and high winds.

Looking north along the Parkway (the parkway is the line in the mountain in the middle of the photo) from Craggy Gardens. Rime ice covered the west facing slopes. It was a balmy 22 degrees there (about 20 degrees cooler than just 15 miles south on the Parkway).
