Dream Home Tour in Burnsville

October 14-15, 2011
The Yancey County Dream Home Tour, benefitting the local campus of Mayland Community College, returns for its second annual tour in the Burnsville area, about 36 miles northwest of Asheville.

The self-guided tour features six grand mountain houses, each of which defines Yancey County in a special way. They range from modern and contemporary homes to historic farmhouses to a rustic log cabin built entirely by hand.

A guidebook provides directions to the dream homes, along with other points of interest. Tour-goers have the option this year of purchasing a two-day ticket to make a full weekend out of it: taking in the colorful fall foliage, visiting artist studios and dining in local restaurants.

Revenue generated from the Dream Home Tour will be used to fund student scholarships and to benefit programs at Mayland's Yancey Campus.

Registration opens each day at 9:00 a.m. at "A Touch of Cass," a home accessories gallery in downtown Burnsville. The tour runs from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. each day, followed by a daily reception from 5:00-6:30 p.m. at A Touch of Cass.

The tour is a community effort. Toe River Arts Council artists located on the route will be featured in the guidebook, along with quilt blocks from Western North Carolina Quilt Trails.

Yancey County Transportation Authority provides shuttle service to three homes where access and parking are limited, and each home will be staffed by volunteers, including Mayland Community College staff, faculty and students. The tour gives attendees the chance to hear students' stories firsthand, underscoring student needs and increasing public awareness for the college.

Advance one-day tickets are $25 and two-day tickets are $40 through October 8. Prices increase to $35 and $50 as of October 9. For info: (828) 765-7351, ext. 311, or www.mayland.edu/foundation.
